Electric GuitarFor years, the acoustic guitar was limited to a supporting role in large musical ensembles because of its volume. Thus, the major motivation that drove the creation of the electric guitar was instrumentalists desire for greater volume. Predecessors of the modern electric guitar were amplified acoustic guitars crudely modified by inventors who attached wires, magnets, and other pickup attachments. (Pickups are electromagnetic devices that increase volume.) However, as technology started advancing in the 1930s, newer versions became more complex, and the electric guitar became a solo instrument, a development that helped expand musical styles.
NORMAN (AP) — John Mayes is a craftsman who builds instruments from the most exotic materials. He exercises a degree of art, as well, because these finely tuned creations are used by artists throughout the country. Mayes, whose workshop is in his home near Lake Thunderbird, claims to be the only maker of hand-built custom guitars in Oklahoma. “I started doing this three years ago,” he said. “I read this book and decided I wanted to make a career of building guitars.”

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.

MIAMI — Jewish motorcyclists? Yes, amazingly they exist, and theres a whole lot more of them than you think - actually more than 50,000 nationwide. Even though nice Jewish boys arent supposed to ride motorcycles, they do, so they might as well wear Kosher clothing, its the least they can do to keep their mothers and wives happy. Well, technically the clothing isnt actually kosher, says Jeff Mustard, founder of King David Bikers and the man behind the creation of the clothing and chachkas line that consists of more than two-dozen products, but theyre not traif either. Reading the merchandise descriptions in the Clothing Chachkas Catalogue is almost as much fun as actually wearing the shirts or drinking from the coffee cups. Mustard, a former stand-up comedian turned professional comedy writer and producer put his wit to work in developing the KDB Gear line. The club logo and shirts were an instant hit, says Mustard, and according to the Brooklyn-born biker whos now a Florida-native, the shirts flew off the table at their Sunday morning ride meetings faster than you could say sale at Loehmans. Everywhere we went people wanted the shirts, Jews and non-Jews alike.

Designers Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo, Valentino and the House of Dior all present seasonal collections of bed linen. They are in direct competition with the traditional Italian linen houses of Frette and Pratesi, which sell single 100 per cent linen sheets for up to pounds 900 a pop. The fact that we are changing our bedroom fabrics as often as our frocks is the strongest signal that minimal severity is over and conspicuous consumption has returned. “There is a crossover between fashion and interiors fabrics,” says woven- fabric designer Paul Vogel. “For example, Calvin Klein bought a hounds- tooth check fashion fabric from me for his interiors range and Nicole Farhi took a suiting pinstripe for bed linen. Fabric designers are keen to comply because you earn twice as much money for an interiors fabric as opposed to fashion. Interiors fabrics are supposedly less transitory than fashion.” Of course, the fabric designers are delighted that fashion clients are making the crossover into interiors. Traditional bed-linen specialists such as Sanderson and Descamps may be less than elated, even though it is prompting both to “advance the boundaries of bed linen”, in the words of Descamps. But luxury is not enough. Now design junkies are only satisfied by luxury with a label. The American troika of big brands, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein have all launched major interiors divisions; not so subtly crossing the line between fashion and lifestyle. The new buzz about designer bed linen is partly thanks to product placement at the new generation of boutique hotels such as The Mondrian in Los Angeles, and Londons One Aldwych and The Metropolitan. The equation is simple. The chosen few who check into luxury hotels as frequently as the rest of us shop at Sainsburys have the small change to pay up to three figures for a piece of Calvin bed linen. Old money wont be conned, so ancien regime hotels such as The Ritz or The Dorchester will not do. The hotel has to be as sexy and young as this seasons Gucci lingerie. Gordon Campbell Grey, MD of One Aldwych, coined the phrase “stealth wealth” to describe both the boutique hotel and the elite who stay there. “Its all about stealth wealth rather than dripping in deluxe,” he says of the One Aldwych interiors he co-designed with Mary Fox Linton. For bed linen, they chose crisp white Frette linen, feather duvets and pillows. Christina Ong, owner of The Metropolitan and The Halkin, says, “I hope The Metropolitanwill reflect the image of those who use it.” Hence the dove-grey ultrasuede bedspread and matching pillows. (But once those crisp linen sheets are taken out of the hotel environment, would any of us be willing to launder the precious little darlings to hotel standards? Yes, you can buy the Rotary Ironer for pounds 875. But, surely, is life is too short.) There does exist an aesthetic argument for fashion designers reinterpreting interiors. “Interior design companies were literally stuck in the decorative mind-set, which is not so modern,” says Paul Vogel. “Fashion is fast. We love our colours. We love looking forward. Theres something to be said for a cleaner, more modern perspective on furnishing fabrics.” But there is always a danger of faddish excess. One little bit of nonsense imported from America is the attention people pay to the “threads per inch” vital statistic on manufacturers care labels. “All threads per inch tell you is how fine the fabric is: the more threads, the lighter the weight,” says Vogel. “In a sense it is too much information.” An equally worrying trend can be detected in Toccas own brand of scented washing liquid. It may look cute but is, in fact, sinister: where will designer labelling end? Will household brands such as Persil and Ariel be joined by Ralph Lauren colour-fast washing powder or DKNY Shake n Vac. The frightening part is people will buy these fantasy products And so to bed. To re-create that luxury hotel experience at home, you can buy hand-embroidered pure linen Frette sheets for pounds 1,100 a set or, for pounds 200 upwards, ensure quality sleep in between 100 per cent Egyptian cotton, all available from a selection at Frette, 98 New Bond Street, London W1, 0171-629 5517. Or dress your bed in pastels the Tocca way, with pillowcases costing pounds 44.95-pounds 89.95, embroidered double duvet cover, pounds 220, embroidered “bed scarf”, pounds 389, all from Shop, 4 Brewer Street, London W1, 0171-437 1259. Nicole Farhi 100 per cent Egyptian cotton bed linen comes in at pounds 30 for a pillowcase and pounds 150 for a double duvet cover, from Nicole Farhi Home, 193 Sloane Street, London SW1, 0171-235 0877. Internet Consultant
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon

“The role of fitness in preventive health care has been well established over the past 15 years. Yet, despite warnings from the Surgeon General in the 1996 report on Physical Activity and Health, approximately 60% of the population do not participate in regular exercise,” reports Laura Gladwin, M.S., chair: AFAAs Board of Certification and Training. “In order to encourage participation and improve health, fitness information and services must be easily accessible and affordable to the general population at home and in the workplace. TeleFitness[TM], administered through our new AHFAA division, will provide efficient global access to personalized fitness information, screening, compliance and referral services.” TeleFitness is based on AFAAs successful 15 year history. As the Worlds Largest Fitness Educator[TM], AFAA has certified more than 135,000 fitness instructors from 73 countries. Led by a distinguished group of health and fitness advisors, AFAA produces a variety of educational materials, including American Fitness magazine, textbooks, reference manuals and videos. In 1998, AFAA will produce in excess of 2,500 educational workshops. The comprehensive research and development that has contributed to the creation of AFAA materials and workshops provides an impressive database of fitness and health information. This extensive database serves as the foundation of TeleFitness[TM]. TeleFitness[TM] links people to information and professional resources through a variety of services. “What makes TeleFitness unique,” states Neil Sol, Ph.D., chair of AFAAs AFP Fitness Practitioner[R] Advisory Board, “is the personalized nature of the service that we are able to provide at all levels, from screening, to education, referral and follow-up.” The cornerstone of TeleFitness is Fitness Triage[R], a personalized screening tool which provides specific fitness information based on an individuals health profile. “Most individuals, and many health professionals do not have reliable information readily available about the health implications of exercise and diabetes, the effect of high blood pressure medications on exercise, or even the considerations associated with pregnancy, aging or weight loss. TeleFitness and the Fitness Triage[R] screening make all of this information, along with hundreds of other topics, easily accessible to individual consumers, employees, personal trainers, and allied health professionals by inbound and outbound phone, fax, e-mail, or through the Internet.”

I also roller blade and hike for fun, but Id love to train for and compete in an Ironman triathlon.” When it comes to his personal training clients, Murray has noticed a trend among peoples approaches to fitness. “Some people are very impatient. Thanks in part to gimmicky infomercials and believing everything they read, many think change will happen overnight,” he says. “Its a matter of altering your overall lifestyle, as well as addressing the connection between body and mind. Achieving these goals is an ongoing process.”

HealthHealth is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

Pest Control

HOW MANY would have thought that the pest control business could mean big bucks for entrepreneurs in the country? Well, hows this for starters? The estimated total business turnover of the pest control industry in Malaysia is about RM80 million. As Dr Lee Chow Yang, Associate Professor (Urban
A few weeks ago I was at a vineyard looking at some equipment that can be used with netting. After taking up two hours of the growers time we decided to head up to the tasting room and enjoy a little fruit of the labor. I had a couple of people with me who were from the Eastern part of the country and hadnt had a chance to taste some of the California wines, so they were more than happy to spend some time tasting, and buying, as it turned out. While we were working I had noticed a couple of other vehicles passing through, headed toward the tasting room as well. Once we entered, our host was immediately recognized. The first question out of everyones mouth was, What were you doing out there? When bird control was the answer, I could tell from the look on the faces present that we were in for a show. The next five to ten minutes were spent covering everything from propane cannons to netting to chemicals. The amount of misinformation was amazing. These people clearly felt that anything that had to do with bird control was a complete waste of time, irritating to look at and listen to. Why? Well because, those birds cant possibly be that damaging to your wine-grapes - theyre just little birds after all. When you have enough experiences like this you begin to get a feel for the public perception regarding animal damage control. As a grower or winemaker you are involved so heavily in the industry that some things are taken for granted. Everyone realizes that gophers, ground squirrels, starlings and finches are vineyard pests who damage grapes - right? Wrong. A very large percentage of your customers, lets say 75% conservatively, do not think you have any sort of problems with wildlife. What do you think of when you see a deer, or a covey of quail, or some cottontail rabbits in your vineyard? I can guarantee that the terms, Oh, how cute, or Hey, look at those deer dont usually come to mind. I cant print what usually comes to mind for most growers. However, for the people that we encountered in the aforementioned tasting room, as well as for a large percentage of your customer base, seeing wildlife is all part of the vineyard experience.

Assembling cabinets yourself can free up money for other kitchen detailsCabinets devour kitchen budgets. So cutting comers with them can allow you to upgrade other parts of a remodel. While aesthetics, not low cost, drove the design choices in architect Jon Stoumens kitchen in Healdsburg, California, the remodel also shows how this creative trick can work for limited budgets.First, Stoumen and his family rigorously studied the Ikea catalog. Once they had measured out and triple-checked exactly what they needed and how it would all fit together, they borrowed a track and made a weekend run to Los Angeles. With unassembled frames, doors, hinges, pulls, and other accessories in tow, they headed back north to put the parts together.
Angled work stations organize this remodeled kitchen, helping to disguise its disproportionate narrowness. The trapezoid-shaped sections–one each for sink, cooktop, refrigerator, oven, desk, and pantry–provide individually tailored spaces for each basic task or appliance. The largest counter, for the sink, is 10 feet long and puts into the room at a 9-1/2[deg.] angle. Its widest near the breakfast area, where it provides a place to set dishes. It narrows at the opposite end to make room for floor-to-ceiling cabinets.
The average kitchen renovation takes six weeks. Fox Hill provides
high-quality kitchen remodels in just 21 days, greatly reducing the time
your life is disrupted and how many meals you have to eat out.

Their new website features beautiful photos of remodeling projects and
testimonials from appreciative clients like Judy and Ken Perrin who said,

especially appreciate the time you spent making sure everything is exactly
how we wanted it. We are very pleased with the results.”

SAN LEANDRO — A person died when hit by a northbound CapitolCorridor train Friday afternoon. The trespasser was standing some distance from a crossing in an area on the railroad that Amtrak calls Elmhurst, said Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari. The victim was struck near Marina Boulevard and Alvarado Street, according to San Leandro police. The coroners office was trying to identify the person Friday night, and a coroners spokesman said the victim was believed to be a female.

The basic premise of person of the therapist training is that therapy is a personal encounter within a professional frame. Although theory and technique are essential to the professional practice of therapy, the process is effected wholly through the relationship between therapist and client. This means that to fathom the therapy relationship, one must understand its components, both personal and professional. The professional aspects of the relationship define the roles of the participants vis-a-vis one another. The personal component of the therapy relationship viscerally relates the therapist to the clients life.Therapy challenges clinicians to use their personal selves effectively within the professional relationship. The personal component of this relationship is not about some generic liking and acceptance of clients. It is specific to the goals and means of therapy. Thus therapists need training that both opens them to themselves and teaches them vulnerability, discipline, and freedom within the relationship. One approach, the person/practice model (Aponte Winter, 1987) attempts to integrate intensely personal work on the self with clinical practice. It illustrates well some of the dilemmas over boundaries that confront trainers and trainees who pursue this personal focus in professional training.

Beth Makens Long runs a $17 million-a-year sales business from the basement of her suburban Chicago home. She puts in 50-hour weeks, and she travels a lot. She could work even longer hours–and earn more–but she has chosen to put her family first. That means turning down business. Says Mid-Term Business Plan Could Hurt Company and Employees The Companys Board of Directors have misconstrued our intentions and now seek to employ methods aimed to thwart our (tender) offer, the Fund wrote. We believe that your methods will materially harm the Companys value. We question why you would go to such lengths and risk diverting Company assets that could otherwise be used for the Companys growth to purchase share acquisition rights from a shareholder that is not interested in divesting itself of its ownership in the Company. SPJSF asked that the Board disclose how much money it has spent on fees to advisors in its efforts to block the tender offer. The Fund noted that Bull-Dogs stock price has declined sharply since the Board last week announced its opposition to the Tender Offer.
Business Editors Dogs International (OTCBB:DOGN) today announced that it is appointing Shaun P. Herness, Ph.D. to the Companys advisory board. The appointment is the beginning of a phasing in program to strengthen the Companys professional resources in view of its acquisition strategy.
Sir: “Baby on board” signs posted by self-congratulatory proud parents (as noted by your correspondents) are bad enough, but what about “Caution: show dogs in transit”? Here the message seems to be “Please drive carefully to avoid possible accidental damage to our precious pooches” - any threats to human lives dont appear to be addressed. Very strange. Bristol

Hypnosis, a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings, can be appropriate for a number of health conditions, especially ones with emotional or psychological components. While the success rate varies, many health care professionals recommend considering hypnosis for the following: Asthma: Studies suggest that hypnosis may be one effective treatment for asthma, especially when there are emotional and psychological factors involved. Childbirth: Hypnosis can help ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH estimates that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure.

From a public perspective, what is the core identity or role of the chiropractic profession in health care? Are chiropractors mainstream or alternative, primary care providers or specialists, and what is the best brand or identity for the profession?Since May, the WFC has been collecting e-mail databases from its 80 member national associations and others. All e-mail addresses have been stripped of names and other information in order to protect privacy rights. This gives the WFC information for every chiropractor who has an e-mail address and has furnished it to his or her association. DCs will receive passwords and information about the survey in late September.
It is unlikely that you became a chiropractor to work in an ER. Imagine my surprise when members of our hospitals chiropractic department were asked to take a call in the emergency department (ED)! We are now in our second year of providing chiropractic coverage to the ED. In November 2000, Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, New Jersey began offering chiropractic care in the ED. In an effort to satisfy the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditations mandate to better address pain management, Meadowlands ED Director Gina Puglisi,MD, and Albert Cataffi,DC, former chiropractic department chief, developed and instituted a “chiropractor on-call” program. Dr. Puglisi readied the chiropractors with an orientation program to define the roles of the chiropractors and the rest of the ED in treating neck and back pain patients. Patients who present to the ED with neck or back pain are screened by the attending ED physician, who is responsible for ruling out serious pathology, fracture, neurological deficit, and other findings that might contraindicate spinal manipulation. The ED physician may order x-rays, blood work or other diagnostic tests. When a severe condition presents, orthopedists, neurologists or neurosurgeons are enlisted to take over the case. Historically, all patients without serious pathology were given prescriptions and discharged from the hospital, with or without adequate relief. With our chiropractor-on-call program, the ED physician now has the option of calling for a chiropractic consultation, which gives the patient the opportunity to receive additional relief.
New Study Confirms DCs Make Vital Contributions to Health Care In the study, the authors surveyed each of the four types of providers in two states they considered “nationally representative” of the profession being surveyed. States in the Northeast and West were chosen to “enable examination of geographic diversity.” For chiropractic, the researchers selected Arizona and Massachusetts; these states, along with Washington and Connecticut, were used for surveys of the other professions. A total of 205 DCs met the criteria for the study, and were interviewed by telephone. During the interviews, the chiropractors answered questions on a variety of subjects, including demographics; training and practice characteristics; practice workload; professional trends; and contributions to the field of health care.

STOCKTON — County supervisors on Tuesday approved cutting drug rehabilitation programs despite emotional pleas from a standing- room only crowd that the programs save lives and curtail violence. On a 3-2 vote Tuesday with Supervisors Dario Marenco and Steve Gutierrez voting no, supervisors decided that the financial burden to the county was too great. In fact, Cohen said that if the county continued running the programs, which are not state mandated, it could lose another $2.35 million by October.
Scotland is expected to have special drug courts as early as this summer that will allow sheriffs to sidetrack addicted offenders into intensive rehabilitation programmes instead of prison sentences. The idea, modelled on a system used in parts of the USA and Canada, is to be pushed forward by drugs minister Iain Gray during next week, along with other announcements to flesh out the crime- fighting and drugs treatment programme of the Scottish Executive. The renewed funding comes with the requirement that it focuses its efforts more clearly on fund-raising from private sector businesses in order to pay for education programmes aimed at children.

An arched window situated just above the garden tub in this master bath left the space bathed in light but devoid of privacy. The homeowners-Elaine and Bob Jackson of Alpharetta, Georgia-wanted the sense of seclusion without losing the natural light and airy ambience provided by the window. A pair of custom-built louvered shutters proved perfect for the window. The Georgian Company, a local shutter shop, measured and designed the shutters for the Jacksons bath. “The critical part of interior shutters is the measuring and knowing how youre going to hang them,” says the shops owner, Bob Gard. “If theyre measured right, they fit like a glove,” he explains. The shutters mount inside the window frame. An outside mount is preferable if you want your windows to appear bigger or if you want to hide an unattractive one, while an inside mount gives a more finished appearance.

Business Travel Editors Today Virgin Atlantic Airways began the first-ever, non-stop scheduled service between Las Vegas and London. Virgin Atlantic will operate a twice-weekly service to Gatwick Airport from Las Vegas using Boeing 747s. Sir Richard Branson, chairman of Virgin Atlantic Airways, celebrated the new route:
Taking a ride through the beauty of the Arizona desert around Tucson is a veritable display of nature in a unique glory. First-time visitors are awed by the mountains, cacti and the endless expanse of the desert, to say nothing of the heat. For those who live in Tucson, the spectacular vista can become second nature; for a person who drives in the area for a living, it might even be tedious, but thats not the case for Robert Malady, a lifelong resident of Arizona. That job is limousine driver for the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, a post the 68-year-old Malady has had for 12 years. It means Malady is the first Loews employee encountered by many guests of the resort, and as a result, he likes putting his best foot forward, as well as that of Loews and the city of Tucson.

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

Pest Control

Posted by on 17 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

Modern pest control is often termed IPM–which can be defined as a coordination of several management functions to: * Resolve these infestations with short-term control(s). * Reduce or eliminate the causes of infestation with long-term resolutions.
Pest controllers locate, identify, repel, and destroy pests. They use their knowledge of pests habits, along with an arsenal of pest management techniques-applying chemicals, setting traps, operating equipment, and even modifying building structures-to alleviate pest problems. The best known method of pest control is pesticide application. Pest controllers apply two different types of pesticides: common use and restricted use. Common use pesticides are the most widely used and are readily available; in diluted concentrations, they are available to the public. Restricted use pesticides are available only to professionals for the most severe infestations. Their application is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of their potential harm to pest controllers, customers, and the environment.
HOW MANY would have thought that the pest control business could mean big bucks for entrepreneurs in the country? Well, hows this for starters? The estimated total business turnover of the pest control industry in Malaysia is about RM80 million. As Dr Lee Chow Yang, Associate Professor (Urban

Landscape ecology and modern art were born from similar desires: to accurately describe the richness and beauty we all perceive; to paint or model the configuration, the array of lines and patches of colors and textures, the surprising events, and the overall evenness or fragmentation of the canvas or watershed as a whole. There are, for instance, hard edge paintings like those of Frank Stella and Piet Mondrian, and hard edge landscapes such as an array of large boulders scattered in a meadow or a ski resort condominium complex butting up on an old-growth forest; and soft edge paintings, like Mark Rothkos, and soft edge landscapes like the mosaicked transitions among freshwater, estuary, and saltwater marshes. Both disciplines love contemplating the contrasts between edges and patches. Parallels go much farther. Henri Matisse (in his cutout phase), Gustav Klimt, and Paul Klee experimented. tirelessly with configurations of patches of color: different sizes, the shape of each patch, the orientation of floating patches with the canvass straight edges and with other patches inside the artworks boundaries. Landscape ecologists similarly ponder patches such as beaver ponds in a watershed or, forest groves dotted among evenly textured farmlands. The right configuration can bring harmony to either canvas or landscape. To conservation biologists, for instance, the size and shape of a patch of forest may mean the difference between protection of a rare warblers home or nest parasitism by cowbirds. Informed intuition serves both painters and naturalists well. The boundaries of the canvas have always bothered painters. One solution was the heavy gold frame. But modern artists rebelled against this over-defining box. They encouraged museums and galleries to paint their walls white and to use,baby-spot lighting. Then, they played with the canvass boundary by painting its edge as white as the Wall. White-on-white can meld the canvas into the greater, art world architecture. Ecologists rarely find heavily framed environments (except for the cherished discovery of isolated islands and caves, where learning about life is so much easier without all those foreign intrusions). For a long time, the desire for simplicity has led ecologists to build a mental equivalent of heavy frames. They lay out a rectangular metric grid, study everything inside it, and ignore or downplay all outside influences. Contemporary landscape ecology, however, has in part rebelled. An edge for one creature may not mean much to another.

The pool was such a hit that from the day it was opened the town has been buoyed up on a wave of civic pride. Not since the alcoholic dwarf and his convicted paedophile father were bludgeoned to death, mutilated and set on fire by a group of unemployed teenagers have the local townspeople been as collectively exhilarated. Phrases like community spirit and our childrens future are still peppering the letters page of the local paper. Property prices have risen slightly. An ecumenical church service of thanksgiving is being planned. And people of all ages are learning how wonderful it is to be able to swim. Naturally enough, in a rural area such as this, there are people who have had little or no previous experience of either indoor swimming pools or unisex changing rooms. On the very first day, a 57-year-old farm labourer was cautioned by police for allegedly exposing himself in a cubicle. And an unclaimed pair of wellingtons and a decomposing ferret were discovered in a locker after a persistent smell was traced to its source. In the pool itself a 25-year-old supermarket manager sustained a nasty head injury after taking a running dive into the shallow end. When the pool was divided into lanes to cater for the serious swimmers, problems also occurred when new swimmers presumed an entitlement to one lane each on a first-come-first-served basis. I myself was reprimanded and then lightly assaulted by an elderly lady who believed that, by swimming in a lane that was already occupied by her, I had taken a serious liberty. But theres nothing that a few extra signs in the changing room and at the poolside wont sort out.

Pest Control

Its been a long rime since I have reviewed gopher control in the vineyard. Its appropriate, given the time of year, so I thought we would take a look at it this month. All three rodents damage vines by chewing on them. New plantings and established vines are susceptible to both root damage and girdling. In addition to plant damage, these rodents will also move enough dirt to redirect water away from vines and literally into a hole in the ground. Ground squirrels specifically will chew drip lines and damage emitters. I have observed squirrels chewing things for no other reason than the fact that they are there. Control of these pests is broken into three fairly broad categories: biological, chemical and trapping.
Modern pest control is often termed IPM–which can be defined as a coordination of several management functions to: * Resolve these infestations with short-term control(s). * Reduce or eliminate the causes of infestation with long-term resolutions.
Pocket gophers are fossorial (burrowing) rodents–so named because they have fur-lined pouches outside the mouth, one on each side of the face. These pockets, which are capable of being fumed inside out, are used for carrying food. Pocket gophers are powerfully built in the forequarters and have a short neck; the head is fairly small and flattened. The forepaws are large-clawed and the lips close behind large incisors. This feature allows them to use their incisors for digging without getting a mouthful of dirt, a unique feature to gophers. There are over 30 species of pocket gophers in the Western Hemisphere. Pocket gophers vary in size from 5 1/2 inches in length to over 13 inches in length. Litter sizes vary from one to 10 but typically average three to four. In the northern part of their range they have one litter per year, as opposed to up to two in the southern ranges. Young gophers are dispersed above ground and are capable of swimming as well on the search for suitable habitat to begin new burrow systems. Pocket gophers feed in three ways: they feed on roots, above-ground vegetation, and they pull vegetation into their tunnel to be stored in food caches for later consumption. In the vineyard, pocket gophers girdle vines, damage roots systems (most often in new plantings), and cause multiple-irrigation problems by promoting erosion and damaging drip lines. They are solitary little beasts, vigorously maintaining and defending their tunnel system. Depending on the species and available habitat, gopher population density may vary from six to eight per acre, to up to 62 per acre. Gophers do not hibernate and only cohabitate during the breeding season The burrowing activity of one gopher produces up to 70 mounds in one month. So how do you control such an active but solitary rodent? The fact that a gopher is solitary works to your advantage. You have three basic pest management tools for gopher control: Biological control, chemical control and trapping.

liposuction

Posted by on 15 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

If no amount of diet or exercise removes those stubborn saddlebags on your hips, or that paunchy spot on your stomach, you may be able to get rid of that localized area of fat through surgery. Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that vacuums out fat from beneath the skins surface to reduce fullness in areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, buttocks, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Although liposuction can produce permanent changes in body contour, it is not a substitute for a healthy low-fat diet and exercise. It will not tighten up loose skin, nor will it eliminate the shallow surface fat irregularities called cellulite. It is a sculpting technique that can improve body proportions, and help make clothing fit better. Liposuction recontours the body by removing some of the bodys finite number of fat cells. Its a myth that when you gain weight, youre adding new fat cells to your body. In fact, each person has a fixed number of fat cells. When you gain weight, those fat cells grow larger, but dont increase in number. When you lose weight, the fat cells shrink in size. Your genes determine how many and where fat cells are distributed, and some people tend to have more fat cells in some body areas than others. For example, some women have more fat cells in their thighs and hips, instead of a uniform fat distribution. Liposuction, in effect, sculpts fat cells from such areas, permanently removing them. But, the fat cells that remain in the area treated still can grow larger if weight is gained. Many liposuction patients often find that newly added weight will not accumulate in the specific areas as it did before, and instead distributes more evenly.
TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION Liposuction was first developed in the late 1970s to remove undersired fat from nearly all body areas, including the face, neck, chin, breast, abdomen, hips, flanks (love handles), inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees and ankles. Developed by dermatologic surgeons in the 1980s, a major advancement called the tumescent technique of liposuction completely revolutionized the procedure. The use of tumescent liposuction allows dermatologic surgeons to safely and effectively remove deep and superficial layers of fat under local anesthesia with relatively little discomfort, virtually no complications and improved cosmetic results. Liposuction is the removal of excess fat with a small, straw-like instrument called a cannula that is attached to a suction machine. The fat layer under the skin is converted to a network of tunnels, and the cannula is manipulated within the layers to remove unwanted fatty deposits. An elastic garment is then worn for compression and healing. The result is a resculpting of bulging areas into more attractive contours.
Q Im a 30-year-old, somewhat active woman who is concerned my weight, so I try to exercise regularly. However, I cant seem to lose weight in my stomach area and in my thighs. Would I be a good candidate for liposuction, and what are the risks associated with this procedure? A According to researchers, liposuction is the nations most popular form of cosmetic surgery, resulting in about 400,000 procedures a year.

The Language of Landscape. By Anne Whiston Spirn. New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, 1998. viii + 326 pp. Illustrations, notes, bibliography, index. Cloth $45.00, paper $17.95. Spirns graceful writing style and sensitivity to the stories places can tell recalls Jonathan Stilgoes Common Landscapes in America, although Spins scope is international. Generously illustrated with her own photographs and landscape plans, Spirns poetic and sensual descriptions of places attempts to bring the reader into direct contact with the features of weather, topography, built environment and cultural values which together constitute the “language” of landscape. “Though human capacity for language may be innate,” Spirn writes, “we learn the language of landscape primarily through living in, building, caring for a place” (p. 193). The strength of this work is in the way Spiro draws upon so many examples, across time and in various places and cultures, to illustrate the ways that humans have interacted with their environments. Although Spirn tells cautionary tales of the mistakes people have made by not attending to the details of landscape, far more of her examples are of positive interactions: from the inner-city transformations of the Westminster Community Garden of the West Philadelphia Landscape Project to the sacred garden at Ryoanji, Japan. By emphasizing humans interactions with the world around them in architecture and garden design, Spirn implicitly rejects the dichotomy between nature and culture that has underpinned so much of western thought.

This may be an unpopular position to adopt, but some of us are going to miss him, you know. Of course were aware of his disadvantages - hes got a bit of an obsession with abroad, for example, whether for holidays or invading - but you have only to clock his easy way with the bag containing his Fender Stratocaster to know this is a born entertainer. And he has brought his own unique gifts, whether showing the touch of a Sinatra over his retirement, the ease with a catchphrase - “pretty straight kind of guy”, “45 minutes”, “peerage?” - or the mastery of the telling, colourful and often intriguingly vague detail, whether it be working as a waiter in Paris, or his earlier bid for a free holiday when, as a teenager, he tried to stow away on a jet bound for the Bahamas. Such things cling to him. Fine details around the Miami trip include the hairy landing; the 24 imported privacy protecting palm trees; jamming with the Gibbs; the suggestion that Mrs Gibb, as a bisexual druid, disapproves of tennis, and now, the quiet (presumably in deference to Mrs Gibb) mass in ritzy Palm Beach, complete with Aston Martin. Come on: didnt you also feel an unworthy tinge of regret at promises from the Brown camp of a “humbler”, less showy premiership?

AbstractKey words: Reservation gaming, land tenure, wealth acquisition, tribal entrepreneurial activity, entrepreneurial adaptationThe Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 (IGRA) was inspired by a desire to increase tribal employment and educational opportunities, thus reducing the chronic poverty of reservations while maintaining a degree of tribal self-governance. Research indicates some short-term benefits. Reservations with casino gaming have increased tribal employment, reduced tribal welfare rolls, increased childrens educational levels (Vinje, 1996; Blackwell, 2001), and in a few cases, such as the Foxwoods Resort and Casino of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe in Connecticut, have made tribal members wealthy (Eisler, 2001). The long-term economic benefits of Indian casinos, however, are still hotly debated within both the tribal structure and the community of academic researchers (e.g., Harvey, 1996; Mezey, 1996).
A CAMBRIDGE University graduate has been trampled to death by an elephant while trying to photograph it during an overland expedition from Britain to South Africa. Second Lieutenant Edward Harrison, 28, a member of the universitys Officer Training Corps, is believed to have woken at dawn and wandered off on his own to photograph wild animals at the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya on Sunday morning. Fellow travellers were woken by the sound of the elephant and later discovered his body outside the secure compound of the Sopa safari lodge.
One of Kenyas finest game parks is under threat from uncontrolled development of hotels and lodges, conservationists claim. The building of four new hotels, which would more than double the number of beds in Samburu National Reserve, has been criti- cised environmental groups which warn that elephant migratory corridors and lion breeding habitats could be destroyed. “These current proposed developments are all along the river. There will be a huge impact on the area most heavily utilised by the wildlife,” she said. “We have to be very careful how we plan for the future. If landscape planning in Samburu is not managed it will have an adverse effect on the environment and the people who rely on tourism for their livelihoods.” Save the Elephants had been threatened with expulsion from Samburu, where the group carries out conservation work protecting the regions 5,500 elephants, at the end of April. The group was given until tomorrow to leave the reserve after being accused by Samburu County Council of “publishing malicious reports”. But the charity earned a last-minute reprieved after local councillors committed to protecting the reserve managed to overturn the order. Councillor Christopher Lalkalepi said Save the Elephants was now “in safe hands. They will not be chased away.”

ON BEAUTY. Zadie Smith. 2005. Read by Peter Francis James. 16 cds. 18 hrs. Penguin Audio. 014-305800-2. $44.95. Cardboard; content, author, reader notes. SA* Smith portrays the ratified air of academic life and its internecine rivalries with an awesome wit. The faculty meetings are hilarious! Narrator James rises to the challenge, making this an auditory delight. This takes the listener into the despair of a marital break-up and explores the sensitive issue of cultural norms of feminine beauty. In Kiki, she offers the gift of a woman who defies the self-hatred such norms provoke. Wide in scope and original. Nancy Chaplin, Libn., VCCW, Goochland, VA
The giddiness and glee over heroin in Please Kill Me is replaced by a sense of small-time tragedy in But Beautiful, because the book takes place where both the pleasure and the pain are, because the book can orchestrate silence as well as noise. Writing on Chet Baker - once the ingenue of jazz, then its lizard-faced junkie poster boy - Dyer, seeking that place where all art begins, can make a complete fool of himself: He could only play with such tenderness because hed never known real tenderness in his l
